Phil Tifo is a French Canadian who grew up in Gatineau, QC. At the age of 19 he took a year off school and headed west to Whistler and see what the big mountains had to offer. That year was the legendary record winter of 98/99. Eventually, what was supposed to be one year out west turned up being ten as of today. After a few years of restaurant work, Phil wanted to make a living with something more creative, that involved working outside in the mountains. His parents bought him a little Minolta before leaving for Whistler, and he started taking photos of his friends in the pipe just for fun. He decided to shift directions in life and move to Vancouver to study photography. After a couple years of eating his socks, things slowly started to work out. Phil’s photos began to appear in magazines like Snowboard Canada, Snowboarder and Transworld. Today Tifo works with over fifteen snowboarding publications worldwide and also shoots kayaking and climbing photography during the warm season.
