Reel Water’s primary focus is creating adventure media that represents the lifestyle, environments and personalities inherent in outdoor sports. Although specializing in kayaking films, our location in Southwest British Columbia provides unique opportunities for filming a wide range of sports, wildlife and documentary subjects. Here are a few examples of our award winning films and projects we have been involved with.

THE SEASON

The Season is a 22 episode, web TV series following five athletes through the course of a single season. A veteran climber invents a new piece of gear. A pro snowboarder searches for a way to return to the roots of his sport. A boulderer returns from a series of injuries with new perspective. A family man goes to Whistler to test himself against the mountain biking’s elite. A young sea kayaker with a troubled past sets out to reinvent his sport. The Season was a finalist at the 2010 Banff Mountain Film Festival, 5 Point Film Festival, Reel Paddling Film Festival and numerous other. Hosted on Arcteryx’s homepage, Outside Online, Itunes, The Season TV and other web venues, this web based new media project took the outdoor industry by storm in 2010

EASTERN HORIZONS…exploring the atlantic coast by kayak

Winner of the 2008 Reel Paddling Film Festival and an official selection at Kendall Mountain Film Festival and many others, Eastern Horizons was the second in a series of films from Reel Water featuring the top sea kayaking destinations in the world. With segments on the huge tidal water of the Bay of Fundy, icebergs in Newfoundland, urban paddling in New York City, and much more, Eastern Horizons was the first adventure film to document sea kayaking on the east coast of North America.

PACIFIC HORIZONS…exploring the Northwest coast by kayak

Winner of the 2008 Reel Paddling Film Festival and a finalist at the 2007 Banff Mountain Film Festival, Pacific Horizons was the first ever adventure sea kayaking film to document the world class sea kayaking destinations and paddlers of the Pacific Northwest. With segments on the huge tidal waves of the inside passage, Orca whales of the San Juan Islands, exposed coast of Oregon and much more, Pacific Horizons captures the essence of the sea and inspires all audience to get out an explore the ocean.

IMMERSION RESEARCH VACATION TO HELL

In August 2006 The Range Life crew’s video application won them a shot at the first descent of the Rio Huallaga in Peru’s North Central Andes. A remote region of Peru and the last reamaining un run tributary to the Amazon River. The Range Life team consisted of Reel Water core staff Bryan Smith, Todd Gillman, Shane Robinson and Andrew Oberhardt. Part of the assignment was to document the expedition from as many angles as possible. From the planning phases to the actual the whitewater of the Huallaga and from the team members to the culture of Peru.

49 MEGAWATTS

Reel Water spent the Spring of 2007 producing the film 49 Megawatts out of a desperate need to get the message out on the give away of hundreds of rivers in British Columbia. Through the passing of controversial Bill 30 the local community of Squamish was stripped of the of their rights in the zoning process on the Ashlu River and the private hydro project moved foreward without adequate environmental oversight and long term planning for the region.

BC SUMMER 2006

Inspired by all the great whitewater footage the Bryan Smith, Shane Robinson, and Todd Gillman collected over the summer of 2006, Reel Water produced the 12 minute short BC Summer 06 the following winter. With shots on the Ashlu River from aerial zip lines, big waterfalls, colorful personalities, and great lifestyle footage it won “Best Overall” at the 2006 National Paddling Film Festival.

YOUNG BLOOD

Matt Madaloni is one of Squamish’s best known climbers and constantly pushing the limits of what interests him in the sport. Deep water soloing in places like Viet Nam and Malta hooked him on climbing without a rope. Using both his skills as a rigger and willingness to try new things, Matt took soloing over land with a net for protection in an attempt to free solo the 5.13c Young Blood. Reel Water produced a short on Matt’s attempts which has been used by NAU in their Collective film series.
